The original gearing looked rather low. I wonder if it was owned by a very old guy who needed to winch himself up hills?
I'm not sure what I'd do with that headset. The rust will clean off with Barkeeper's Friend or similar, but will come back if it gets damp. I'd either find a NOS replacement or (and I'm a philistine, I know) fit a Tange Falcon cartridge headset, which is functionally superior, lighter, and still looks reasonably vintage.

I have been going through my late fathers collection of bikes and thought this would of interest to the forum. I have an Ephgrave that my dad used to race at the old Paddington track in the 70's.
It has been resprayed at some point, it sat in the loft of my parents house since the early 80's until recently.
I'm trying to find out a bit more about its history, so that I can then do a contemporary restoration and bring it back to life.
The frame and fork are both numbered 2887 LE.
