it was quite clear he meant black people!
Well if he was from Georgia, say, where 98% of blacks voted for Obama and 75% of whites voted for McCain, you might forgive him. Same country, same issues, same needs for the future, so why such a disparity? Even with a landslide win, Obama didn't get a majority of white voters nationwide.

Mind you, even in a landslide, I don't think Obama got a majority among male voters either. It was only his huge majority among women voters that pulled him through.

I'm not sure theres any substance in that statement Anthony. Unfortunately there may be an element of truth in the race aspect with a high turnout nationwide from Afro-American voters.

Did the Americans really get it right? Depends where you stand I guess. If the country as a whole wants an extreme left wing liberal President who will help the 'underprivileged' then maybe yes?

As a good (American) friend of mine said, "people are voting for what they don't want".

I guess we have to wait and see what effect Obama's election will have on the economies of both our countries.

Hooray! for the less right wing fella! :D

Lets face it anyone's got to be better than the last scumbag. Lets hope thats the last of the bush years. I don't think the world could survive another Republican nut.

Al, a Socialist and proud of it.

Then its socialism we shall have. :(

I don't think you understand what true socialism really means. The founding principles of the USA are, essentially, socialist in thier outlook.

True socialism means social mobility and people being allowed to reach their potential. Doesn't seem too bad to me.

For a country so "Christian" as the USA to openly decry the values followed by Christ's direct followers (we'll leave aside the issue of historical accuracy or otherwise of the bible and other "holy" books) when they were clearly the first (known) communist group does seem slightly ironic.*

Chin up Mike, you can have Sarah Palin next time!

Do understand that Obama isn't anywhere near being a socialist by any definition of that word in use outside the USA, and obviously most of us here understand it in our terms.

My own sense of Obama is that his big weakness is that he is governed by a need to be popular and to be acceptable to people, which might make him duck big issues. The notion that he will increase taxes in a way that contradicts the program on which he ran for the presidency doesn't fit with what we have seen of him. For one thing he will be desperate to be reelected in 2012, and that will constrain him even if that smooth salesman's moderate exterior is as bogus as some people seem to suppose.
