Help to identify an old bike brand

Jav

Retro Newbie
Hi! My name is Javi and I’ve found an old bike (i think 1920’s or 1930’s) in a very well condition, but the brand is almost deleted. What I know is that the saddle is a dunlop one (rubber), the hubs are Sturmey Archer 3 speed with drum brakes (model KB 4) and frame number is “RU 4638”. Could anybody help to find at least the brand? Thank you very much!!

It sort of looks like the bottom of a BSA head badge and BSA used to put red box lining like that on their bikes. It also looks like the same sort of profile as a BSA fork and the same sort of shape fork crown.

Is there a date number on the Sturmey Archer hub? Usually if there’s a two-digit number it denotes the year the hub was made e.g. 52 is 1952. If not, the model number will point to a date range if it’s a mid-1930s or earlier hub.

Re:

Hi, Interesting find, I am thinking it is possibly an old police bike or maybe some other offical or military bike, it is not dis-similar to this 1953 Humber Police issue ? maybe not the same manufacture but the spec is very similar, I would be inclined to pursue that as a line of enquiry ( see what i did there ? ) :)

Yes, I thought the same but no way to find this kind of serial number on BSA manuals... It’s the same situation with some Phillips bicycle (like this one http://bicicletasclasicasleo.com/philli ... 6vKCBbtaEc ), quite similar with some models but impossible to find this kind of 2 letters plus 4 numbers... and obviously the trademark doesn’t seem the same.
I have to check if there is any other number on the hubs, I didn’t see any other... otherwise, i’ve seen at Sturmey-archerheritage that this hub is from 1918.
Thank you very much for your information!!

Re:

Maybe the `RU` number is an asset tag number applied by or on behalf of the Police and not a manufacturers number at all? . RU could be `Royal Ulster` if it was a police bike ( just thinking out loud ... ) but a possibility ?

Re:

K4 indicates 1934.
Looks like "Made in England"
Bikes like this were made in literally millions in the 1930s. Many different manufacturers, often used same components.
Perhaps the chainwheel will show something? remove the tin lid cover and look.
Its not Raleigh.

Keith

To further what Keith said, it’s got a mid-30’s SA shifter on the top tube like that.

Is there a number on the rear dropouts at all?

Re:

Despite I find much more exciting Marshallluky’s answer, I agree with Keithglos because there is no signals from any brand... but there is a “made in England” on the top of the handlebar
Thanks to all!!
