Take it to a GOOD bike shop and get them to check rear hanger alignment.......sounds like it's out of line reading the thread.

I havn't washed it since I came back from Coed - y - Brenin at the weekend. Its annoyed me so much I decided it didn't deserve it. Looks like I will need to fnd a decent bike shop nearby, anyone got any suggestions? I'm in birmingham so I could travel if it would meen the gears are sorted.

well the prob. would have to be diagnosed, before it could be fixed. that depends on what the prob. EXACTLY is.
apart from the comparing thing i mentioned earlier, have you checked the dropout alignment? if its even slighty out, the one gear it work in well will be the smallest.
my shops to far away, (crowthorne), id do a webby search & trust your instinst's (instinks!?)
