I used to manage with a few loose spokes into an old rim for this, and to remove freewheels from hubs where spokes had been chopped out.

Personally I always preferred gears in direct drive. Some 20 years ago I did try a Shimano 4 speed, which was a revelation compared to the Sturmey Archers.

Don’t know, he didn’t mention the lack of rim being a problem, hopefully he will reply (unless it’s a trade secret) :p

I think my dislike of SA started when I was repairing mainly AW in the 50s. The ones I saw were always full of what looked like rusty mud, where water entered behind the cog. Many utility bikes were left out in the rain, but were essential transport.
These were often old roadster types with rear facing ends and rod brakes.

For a 2 mile commute the bike was cheaper than walking.

Just remembered, I did have a K5 in the mid 60s on a 1935 Grubb recumbent. I also once built a wheel on a Dursley Petersen large flange 3 speed, the spoke holes are only present around 70% of the flange perimeter.

Having them laced into a wheel makes it slightly easier to remove the r.h. ball ring but if not I can usually remove them holding in one hand.
But yes, I do have a jig that can hold shells without damaging then. Had a few stubborn ones that required it but it's mostly used for removing l.h. ball cups on FM's and the like.
