Just arrived in the retro mancave is this 1990 Kona Cinder Cone in funky splatter paint finish and with a full Suntour XCD group set. Thanks to "The ken" for this "Special" delivery (read on...!) :D

I've not measured, but I think it's around a 19" Frame.
Looks to be all original, maybe the rear tyre (Panaracer Duster) has been changed , but otherwise it's stone cold standard spec I believe.

Now for the fun part.... it has a cracked driveside chainstay. I say cracked, it's actually completely separated

All seems well when the rear wheel is fitted and holding it all together, a quick ride down the road and it felt "normal ". But when I removed the rear wheel the dropouts sprung apart and were a bugger to get the rear wheel back in

I'm hoping to get the chainstay welded/plated locally, it doesn't need to be pretty, just functional, I'll be using the bike to get to work & Back, although it seems rideable ad it is just now... :?

Oh, and at first inspection the seatpost seems seized, handily at the right height for me

Anyway, pics... the horror show is at the end...

Re:

It seems the rear wheel has been replaced/upgraded to a silver Mavic M231 at some point too :)

There's so much flex and torsion in that area, any repair will be a sticky plaster at best.

That's all it needs to be :)

Re:

And so 2 become 1 again :)
Had a friend weld a repair in exchange for a few bottles of beer.
"Don't go doing any crazy stuff on it, probably ok to commute on".... think I'll follow his advice

Plan is to cover the scar with some white spray paint (might even have a go at re-doing the splatter look), and build up as a commute/shop bike.

Re:

The last few sunny evenings have given me chance to get the bike put together whilst enjoying a beer at the same time. Win win
A few coats of white spray paint hides the scar on the chainstay.
Everything works, i quite like the suntour XCD group with its X-Press shifters.
Condition is more "survivor" than "garage queen" , but it's going to be used and gather more patina over time any way. I stuck some amberwall slick tyres on just so I'm not tempted to take it offroad

Two minor issues to resolve though.
1. Pedal end caps are missing, guessing they were plastic? Can they be bought separately? If not I'll have to find some old pedals to cannibalize.

2. I stupidly lost the bolt for the bottom bracket mounted cable guide  the cable tension is keeping the guide in place at the moment, seems ok, I've seen replacement cable guides & bolt for sale, are the bolts a common size? As the one on this bike seems like it's an M10 or something :?

Probably more photos to come after a good polish...
