Re:

Finally time to start the build.

It's been awhile waiting in the wings at over two years researching, finding the parts, restoring elements that were never going to be possible to find new and being patient.

All the items that I wanted to obtain are now here, which was intended to be a reflection of what, to me, an ultimate vintage Hot should be - a custom take on the factory's standard Explosif, featuring a unique paint scheme (in this case the frame) using a mixture of both standard and exotic parts; the latter being an excuse for a bit of all-out fantasy with nos XTR & XT and an almost mint 150 Race light titanium bar.

I have also an almost stock 91' Explosif, of which I very much wanted this built to be related back to, but as if on overdrive.

Re: Kona Hot 93 Red Fade

Super sexy parts, I just love seeing them
Pictured together ready to be installed :)

I have my own Kona project to start soon, a 92 Cinder Cone in red with a few period upgrades, not as high end but I’ll be taking inspiration from your build.

Re:

Thanks Martin / Wadsy! - your red cindercone sounds really good and very nice to hear this can be somewhat of an inspiration.

I remember clearly my first ride on an 89’ Cindercone with Sugino cranks, back in the day, and it blew me away how good it was compared to the MBK I used to ride in a hthe day 🤦

I’ve literally not looked back since.

Actually I saw that there was a very unique red 89 splatter version of the cindercone that I rode for sale in a monstrous size 21” version. Maybe a cindercone custom! See attached.

Look forward to your thoughts!

Re: Kona Hot 93 Red Fade

My only thought is blimey that’s huge and possibly a foreign market paint scheme like Marin did for Germany?
