bloody crap....

Old Dell Lattitude Pentium 4 - auto update for SP3 and 'boink' goes my HDD

'BEEP: no boot up source availble'

or something like that.

been using sp3 since the day it became commercially available so had it before the public release and had no issues and have installed it on new and old systems.

has it killed the drive alltogether or caused a corruption in the OS

Can you not reboot on safty mode, press F8 or F something? I tend to press them all  as soon as you switch it on and then reset the computer back to before you upgraded using system recovery?

Sorry if you have already tried this.

gazz, that only works if it can actually find the bootable device.

Take floppies/CD/DVD/Pen drives out just in case...

What Latitude is it ? C640/840 ?
Is the harddrive spinning (well you should here it)

Do you have a Windows XP CD handy

i've disabled auto updates,i'll install it in six months time when all the bugs are ironed out
;)

yeah it isnt buggy i been using for a while since before public release as i had commercial access to it the fact the system bit the bucket is nothing to do with it, what make a#hard drive is it get the diagnostic tools from manufactures website they offer free diag tools to check if its just a corup install update can be fixed easy

It basically sounds like your installation has corrupted the master boot record. If you use your XP CD and boot from that you can choose an option to repair windows.

If the worst happens you may just have to re-install windows.
