Cross-Bike Sizing

So, despite being a lanky so and so i prefer my mountain bikes a touch smaller than the manufacturers recommend for my height.

I actually find a Kona size 20 perfect as despite being the largest Kona size, it comes up a fraction smaller than most manufacturers biggest offering which is typically a 21" seat-tube.

So, on a MTB i generally like a 19/20" seat tube with a 23" top-tube (as opposed to 21" and 24").

When sizing a cross bike, can i follow the same rules? With a road bike i'd probably go for a 61, but i just wonder if i'd be more comfortable on a 58 crosser.

Before you all say go ride one, i'm wondering what your experiences are.

Cheers.

1 cm smaller than your road frame is a general rule
