Ok - have has an appaling response from teh painters regarding doing the Trimble paintscheme. One place said they cant do carbom, and the other said they cant do the design. I even inquired about whether it would be possible for them to do the fade basecoat and then I could then add the stripes at my leisure. Still blinkin expensive - think 25 quid + postage for just a three colour fade.

So...

Iv ebeen looking on ebay and am actually thinking of maybe doing a DIY effort. You can buy all kinds of exciting paint for car restorations (candys etc) and I would love to do it myself as Im quite good at that (did insustrial design at Uni and had to make real prototypes and models etc)

Now - Im unsure of what I need to do it:

The paint - what type is best (2 pack?)

The spray gun (gravity fed or compressed?) and if so what about a compressor?

Looking forward to this already!

I could offer it as a service maybe if it goes well...

Anyone have an idea what I need to set this up and have a go?

no idea what you will need but great idea :D , cant wait to see the finished product, good luck, i am almost as excited as you about this

for paint have a look at acrylic water based stuff
2 pack is bloody leathal an can be expensive upto £1000 a litre
go on some of the airbrush sites helmet /motorbike custom stuff
as with most things these days there appears to be less freebie stuff
on tinternet everyone wants their share.
as for guns a cheap big one (machine mart etc) for coverage
then a finer one (devillblis, badger etc) for the detail stuff
small airbrush comps are £70 upwards, but for a big gun you'll need a
bigger compressor (you should already have one anyway, makes fixing
punctures easier)
the thing to remember with painting stuff a lot of time goes into the prep
work ,cutting back ,base coating ,flatting out masking ,top coating, finishing
my mate chalky paints race bikes/cars in his spare time and i've picked up a bit from him ,but when someone asks how he can justify 2k to paint
a pug or similar and the paint costs a grand plus 80 hrs work in it
i see why he gets pissed off.
so your £25 for a 3 colour fade sounds like a bargain,just i would'nt
trust them to do a good job for that.
you can do a reasonable job with spray cans tho
just don't practise on your beloved trimble :D
http://www.airbrush.com/how-to-guide.aspx try this

its just what jez said he was quoted
as i said seems suspiciously cheap i would expect nearer a coulple of
hundred for that (done well)

No no no no - I was in a rush afer work - Scant is right

250 quid for a fade.

I think I will do it myself.

Just looking on ebay for ingredients....

I will do the Trimble first ;)

think you should do a "how to post " on this
but please start with something less precious.

Im pretty convinced I can do a good job. I just need to know what paint to use.

I understand that preparation is 90% of the work...

and skill is another 120% and then luck another 350%...

;)

patientce is a lot of it too
my mate makes it look a piece of piss my efforts were more a load
of shite
