Selling a car - should I blank out the number plate?

I guess it's a case of "what have I got to lose" for 2 mins work in GIMP?

A mate had his number plates nicked from his car the other week. Down a quiet village road, in the hour and twenty minutes we were out for a night ride. Very odd. No other cars touched, no other damage!

advertise what year it is and thats all,its not worth risking nowadays,like above,if there serious theyll ask

Wouldn't it be just as easy to go down to your local supermarket and make a note of a number plate from there? Should I cover my plate up everytime I park up.

Don't get it myself. Urban myth I reckon. :?
 
If you go down to the local supermarket you can't be certain that there'll be a 1999 silver astra coupe or whatever, if you type it into autotrader etc you'll get loads - note number plate, job done.
 
True, but my point is that there's so many ways that the likelihood is very low and possible even without the internet. These things can happen but I feel the risk is overhyped.

Out of interest, how many people have had it happen to them?
Does anyone know anyone who has had it happened to them?

Balance that against who has been affected by some kind of internet fraud/scam - ebay, Paypal, credit/debit card details, etc.

What's the real risk?
