Campy vs. Shimano cog spacing - the same?

I am having terrible trouble getting clean shifting with my Shimano levers and Campy 7 speed screw-in block. However I adjust the derailleur, I can't get clean shifting right across. It's almost as if the spacing is wrong. Any ideas?

The lever will do 8 speed - what options do I have for upgrading the wheels to an 8 speed cassette arrangement so that I can get a wider range of gears for my local hills?

Spacing between Campag and Shimano cogs is slightly different as is the lever throw. You can usually get an acceptable result but it will not be *perfect*.

Campag 7,8 and Shimano 7 have the same cog pitch (5mm)
Shimano 8 is 4.8

You have to match Campag mech with Campag shifter, or Shimano with Shimano.

So if you have Shimano 7 levers and mech, you should be OK. Shimano 8 will shift 0.2 out on each, but can usually be persuaded to work. Set it up on cog 3 or 4 not 1.
I would check the cables are well oiled next.
