Kona Rove Ti 59 -> Salsa Warbird 2 (a different crack at it) p.7

Dear Guys,

Can't hide my excitement. About 16 years too early (24) but just ordered some Tennessee Ti.
The project is as following: I'm a Kona dealer (I have a shop in Antwerp, Belgium) and after telling them I wanted to go to Kona Hawaii to try to climb that most insane vulcano on the main island they gave me their (distinctive) thumbs up. After much debate over which bike (It had to be a Kona of course) we ended up with a custom build Rove Ti (size 59) with Kona project 2 full carbon disc fork.

While maybe not as ideal as say a Salsa Fargo but I believe it'll do. Leg strength perseveres!
With some 50-622 tires, salsa cowbell 2 drop bars and ZTR iron cross laced to sram x9 and a sram rival/x9 low gearing, it's gonna be quite a sober yet reasonably light and hardwearing build.

I'd like to keep you updated about this childhood dream come true. Retro bike has always been greatly inspiring for my builds (both personal and for customers in the shop). I hope you guys can help me trough out the build with some suggestions that'll help me mount 'Massive Maunaloa'.

Surely if you are riding on hot lava, you would need Ti forks to match the frame instead of plastic ones ;-)

fellow retrobike ravers,

as many others on this forum may know, building a ti bike can lead to a neurotic addiction to acquire only the best bits of bike jewellery. I myself however am on a budget diet and don't want to overspend. Especially if said parts don't actually deliver much of an upgrade in performance, ease of use or servicability.

here is what i'm thinking

seatpostclamp (must have a thomson :cry: :roll: )

cables (jagwire compressionless vs supllied sram cables)
bar tape (brooks leather vs generic epa)
bottom bracket (sealed vs ceramic)

got the wheels done today on a late night in the shop!

will take pictures tomorrow, along with all the parts that are going on the build.


btw:
I know that some tire/rim combinations are more difficult to mount than others, but this one (challenge strada biancha 30/622 gravel tire on the ztr iron cross rim) was a REAL NIGHTMARE!!

I managed to put them on with soapy water and a lot of pursuation (and still could only manage without inner tubes). Will leave them to stretch over night and try to inflate them again tomorrow. Any tips?

patience.
I have challenge PR on stans arch 29er rims. they were a true nightmare to get on the first time. and then comes the bead seating...
they will stretch a bit eventually with some inflation/deflation cycles. so try to get them on with a tube in them even if they're only halfway on you carefully inflate to stretch a bit.

Wheels done! All and all build very easily round and true.

Dt Swiss revolution spokes & nipples x 64 315 gr

Cassette + QR's + fat tires = heavy

But will make me proud on the road
