Look Bernard Hinault team bike

I use a bike to go to my work. 4 days a week 60 kilometers. 30 in the morning and 30 late afternoon.

My normal bike is a Gios Torino Super Record with modern campy. A modern steel bike with the luxury of modern component but the looks o a retro bike:


In the winter it kills my hart when I use this bike for cycling to my work.

How about this Look Bernard Hinault team bike.



This week I build up the bike. Put fenders, light and safety signs in it.

In spring I remove the winter equipment and sell the bike. Every year I try to use an other bike in winter :xmas-wink: :xmas-big-grin: :xmas-cool:

not sure if its a tvt re badged ?. ' Stringfellow' will know hes done one [la vie clair] not sure if he's got 'bernard hinault ' written on the down tube . what would you put the date ?

if it is that tvt sprayed..i love it a bit less but still want it ! i was always jelous of sringfellows la vie clair
and jelousy is the sign of true love so in the spring please pm me and sell it to me!! i can just imagine hinault on it now shouting out order's and telling off people for attacking and peeling oranges and stuffing them in his gob whilst riding at the front.I read he still cycles 300k a week.

Last week I had a cold so take the car to work and no hurry tot this project. Feel not wel for some days :roll:

A few whisky, some extra hours in bed, tender love and good easy music and this "retro bike worker" is almost back on the road.

This Look bike is not the kind of project that must deliver a stunning bike. Then better look at my other projects.

This Look bike just must be functional ok and low cost. Remember this bike will hit the road when snow and salt is on the road!

The MKS chains are great for retro bikes. Always have some om the shelves in my cave


These brake levers I found for a few quid. I don't now if i buy some hoods. Cost me 30 Euro! On the winter bike I use ski gloves and maybe just some handlebar tape.


Still a lovely pair of shifters. Never change much gear on the road to work but with a storm even I need to show some more tooth.


The frame has a few red details. So handelbar tape in red?


There was a saddle in my "always surprising me what I've got boxes".
The seatpin is a much harder story. For a frame like this you need a 25mm pin Not a common one. But this one I bought new for only 10 Euro. I took some weight for the pin. Why? because guy's like I are for the drilling and sawing era :mrgreen:


Waiting for a new headset. The old one looks as the cobblestones in Paris-Roubaix.

Meantime I will clean the other parts...........................

No no i beg of you do not do it ! it is too precious, the paint! they are not common are they ? the paint work is unique iconic and would not look out of place in ' the tate modern ' why not use an old giant cadex ? please no augh augh gh uh .

I don't wanna hurt you. I just need a bike in the winter to go to my work

If its a TVT it will have TVT embossed in the carbon on both of the chain stays. Mine also has look embossed on the rear dropouts as well.
Mine is a Look 86 & I have now replace the missing "bernard hinault" decal. Without close up detailed photos its difficult to see exactly what this is but the rear brake bridge is correct for that year of TVT.
In my opinion If this is a Look 86 then DON'T ride it as a winter bike, there are much too rare, & difficult to get hold of. You would be better off riding a Colnago C40 for a winter bike as they are as common as muck or the Gios you have as they are quite easy to get hold of & of course can be very easily repaired & resprayed. Somebody please buy this off him before he buggers it up.

All the stuff is "in the house" to build up this Look.

The brake set that was on the bike I don't going to use. Even with a extra pair that I already have it's not possible to make a complete and fine working set.


So a fine new set will help me during the dark winter rides to stop in time. Less then 40 Euro's :?:


Brakes without cables are useless and believe me in real life the red is not so candy. I always use new brake cables when building a bike. New bike or retro bike. Safty first :idea:


The headset in the Look was terrible. So for 8 Euro this retro looking Diacompe. Fine for the purpose of the bike. But it even look so good you can use it as a Campy wannabee.

I damage the steertube of the frame while pressing new cups. Not much pressure and I think the tube was not ok.

another tragic mishap...s'pose grease and new bearings on the old headset wasn't good enough? :-/

Oh bollocks, that's not good, sorry to hear that.

In future I wonder if it might be better to open up the steerer tube diameter slightly and use some sort of Loctite to hold the cup in place rather than using force which is obviously causing damage
