Me too Shaun...they weren't all that good though, still got punctures...
Here is a picture of the pump I bought to use on my racer in 1972(!)
I'm still using it!
Its a Spanish Eibar and it still works very well. The business end sits against the bottom bracket and the top fits into an umbrella clip like the one in the third photo.
Don't know if you can still get similar ones but it was a pretty effective and lightweight option.

.......blimey, I had one of those 
The way we used them was to find a wall, take the wheel off the bike, stick the pump on the wheel and with the wheel hanging in the air at shoulder height on the pump ..........press the pump against the wall and get the tub inflated as hard as possible for the time trial
as the wheel was hanging off the pump then there was no force on the valve stem.......
Not sure if it makes sense.
