yes or no?

frame is early 90's steel, lugged. Stem is an ITM eclypse. Frame's going for paint next month, do i send the stem in with it?

You will encounter several problems with a painted stem!

1: stem will not fit into steerer tube.
2: stem might not go through headset lock ring.
3: if stem does fit through into headset/tube the paint will eventually crack and flake off where the stem flex's against the headset.

I'd either keep the stem as it is or buy a new one.

I'd agree with Ian but didn't stop these stems being painted!

I remember having a Cinelli stem stove enamelled black years ago instead of buying a proper one and looked mint
but 6 months later it was chipping around the stem shaft and around the holes were the bars go through,
the paint even coming off around the allen key bolt holes, worst still I was a bugger for holding the centre
of the bars and my wrist watch started to scratch the left side.

It looked very nice at first but soon got stripped back to original.

Is it a black Eclypse (rarer) or one of the super-shiny plated ones? If the latter, I'd keep it as it is - I think that finish looks excellent!
