Steerer Replacement

Talking to Justin Burl at http://www.Burls.co.uk at the moment.

They are Titanium frame/component building specialists with a view to making affordable Ti steerers for retro forks. Its early stages but he seems keen to make this happen. Sure they can do steel and alloy to if required.

I'm looking at Ti steerers for Manitou crowns, Rockshox and others ?? Just gauging if there is enough interest.

He will need detailed dimensions of steerers, crowns etc which I will post up here.

I'm in no way involved commercially with this, just seeing if we can find a reliable cost effective solution for this issue which crops up quite regularly.

Justin has also mentioned a specialist who can press fit steerers into a crown.

Are there any suspension forks that actually come with a Ti steerer? I ask as I can't think of any and wonder if there is a reason why that would be the case (cost ignored).

Because Aluminium is cheaper and lighter for threadless?


Ti would be useful for light threaded steerer's, but with the butted steel thread you get would it really be lighter.
I think Rockshox may have used a Ti steerer with the 700c Road MAGs.

Will he be able to replace the Rockshox steerer's given they are cryogenic/rammed in ?

I only know of Rockshox but aftermarket Ti steerers were available for Manitou 1 forks. I have a set and they are superb.

I guess cost is the main reason why Ti wasn't offered more as an option. Aluminium steerers scare me tbh. Somewhere there is a picture online of TiPinMan after his accident :shock:

After reading a few threads, I'm keen to see if we can find a safe, light and long lasting solution ( no rust ) to keep our retro forks working for years to come. Its early days but if we can show enough interest there is a good chance Justin and his team can find a solution.

The steerers can be press fit in with the right shim keeping costs down and to any length required. They need examples of forks/steerers or measurements so they can research the best tubing - that's where we can help We need to make some NOISE !!!

There were some available on eBay a while ago for shockingly little money, keep hoping they'll be back sometime!

If you find a link, even a dead one post it up please. The Russians can supply them very cost effectively apparently and they are lathed down by Burls ( hopefully ) to the final exact spec.

I am waiting for a digital Vernier Caliper to be delivered so I can give Burl's the specs on the Manitou versions. Justin Burl needs those dimensions for Rockshox, Marzocchi, Pace and others. Pace has run out of many steerer types now. The eBay seller has also run out of 1 in Ti steerers which should be popular with us Retro types

We need make of fork, max steerer length needed (220mm ? ), how much steerer is contained within the fork crown ( press fit/cryo fit ), steerer exact widths including distance to where the crown race taper starts and its exact max width. There may be other dimensions. Its hoped there will be lots of standardisation but we will have to see.

Maybe RB peeps prefer the hit and mis of the steerer exchange system. I have a few alloy ones ( which fracture ) and steel versions. The latter have signs of rust/corrosion, who knows ? but I'd like a fresh clean Ti steerer fitted which won't rust. Lets not forget a lot of these forks are 20 yrs old +

I've got 2000 Judys and 1" AMP F3s I can measure if needed. Both in situ though!

i'd be up for a 1" steerer for my Bontrager composite rigid fork. it requires a groove at the bottom for a retainer ring. also wouldn't mind a 1-1/8" steerer for a set of Marzocchi XC600. both are clamp fit, not pressed.
