1983 Saracen...

Damn late thread arrival... Anyone seen where Ariadne went?
I bought a Raleigh Super Maverick at Terry Wrights in about 1985 (last years model, the Tange one) with a selection of those beautiful Suntour components. Welling up thinking about them...:'-*
Still using a VX rear mech with XC covered shifters on a rigid steel frame (Girvin forks...). The Mountech rear mech died fast as the top jockey wheel was a ring of plastic with teeth on around the lower spring housing - bad idea. VX was cheap and better! The Raleigh was lent to someone in London to help him get to work, and he sold it and told me it was stolen. Hey Jonty, how's the coke habit?
So anyhoo - I used to ride in the Peterborough area with a fellow on a grey Ridgeback and someone who lived in the Cathederal grounds with a dayglo yellow - I mean, YELLOW - Saracen, with the first biopace rings I ever saw. The Saracen was, IIRC, 531 tubing with 753 rear stays - maybe custom? Wonder where that went, he didn't ride hard enough to have broken it...

Exploded view of the Mountech rear mech, showing the weak link in the design - the top pulley that runs around the extra pivot.
You can see that the ARX uses exactly the same parallelogram as the Mountech and the two are interchangeable - top is a Mountech cage fitted on an ARX and bottom an ARX cage fitted on a Mountech.
Although the hybrid at the bottom will not take up as much slack as the Mountech will, it does at least use conventional jockey wheels. The chain runs slack in small/ small gears, but still manages to cope with a 34t freewheel.

Cousins I believe.
Nick Crane can be seen on telly quite often these days, on programmes such as "Coast".

Been watching this thread since it started, and have to admit that I really like this bike. Lovely!

However, unlike most bikes on here which I just "like", this is one which I'd really like to own. Still haven't found one small enough..... :(
