disc brakes need help as not a clue

hello i have been offered a stump jumper the only thing it needs are brakes but it is disc only. i have had bikes with discs before but i have never had to buy any as i was always happy with the ones that i had. can anyone recomend any good choices for a budget of about £80 to £100

Assuming you're talking second hand, you shouldn't have any trouble finding something decent within budget. I've always been happy with Avid Elixirs. Shimano XT or SLX get good reports, and are apparently easier to bleed. Magura and Formula are also well worth a look.

Sorry, I don't think I've really narrowed it down much there, but hopefully I've helped a little.

You may need to shorten the hoses and bleed after you have fitted them to the bike. Nipples/olives and a bleed kit will eat up some of your budget. If you are able to follow instructions, then this is all pretty straightforward - certainly not a problem for 99% of members here.

you may need to get adapters to fit the frame and fork. there are two sort IS and post mount.

IS came out first and many forks were IS but are now nearly all post.
Frames are still mostly IS but I have seen some post mount too.

The brakes needing syringes to bleed are a nightmare e.g. Avid elixir, Formula R1 whereas the older design that have reservior e.g Margura Marta and older Shimano are a breeze to bleed.

All of these have reservoir with cap so don't need syringes to bleed.

thank you for the info I will be going for the easiest one's to bleed. I am going to have a look at the bike tomorrow evening so I will know exactly what it needs and if to much work I will leave it

The Avid BB7 are a great alternative to fluid brakes.
I use them on my winter bike as they're so easy to set up and service.
You can pick a full set up new for around £50, if you don't mind waiting a week for them to arrive from China

I've got some brand new, never used Shimano Deore ones you can have for £30. I got them from CRC when on offer for a project that never got going. PM if interested.
