old bike rebuild

Not too sure where I should be putting this on the forum, so I’ve started here sorry if it not in the Wright area.
I’m re-building this old Hercules jeep boys bike I believe is from the 50s I’m not restoring it completely I’m just cleaning it up a little and repairing it to working order.

I would like to share this little project with retro bikes and any tips or ideas while doing so will be grateful.

I’ve got the bike from a local car boot sale for £5.00 so that’s the total spends so far.
Here’s a few pictures excuse my shed.

Well little more work on the old jeep,
Tonight I’ve take some parts off of the frame to make things easier while removing the rust from the old parts.

I’ve done some wire-wooling and brushing on the handlebars which are not the best but I am only just cleaning things up not completely restoring the chrome so has the pictures will show they look better than they was.

A little 50-50 of the brake leaver clamp shows what a bit of elbow grease can do
And a few more pictures of the brake leaver cleaned and put back together.7

Has anyone got any ideas on product to apply to the metal work to clean them up a little more or to protect them?

For chrome I believe aluminum foil crumpled and run over it restores it well and removes rust?

I'd apply car wax on the chrome to slow the re-appearance of rust, plus the occasional wipe over with WD-40.

Thanks interesting idea’s will try these out car wax and wd40 I’m using all the way thought doing the clean up.

will have a go with alluminum idear.

Have also used some car cleaning back to black on tyres and rubbers

Have been cleaning the calliper brakes up a bit tonight and replace rusty bolts and washers etc.
Just a quick question does anyone have suggestions’ on what to clean the outer cables and handle grips up with, was thinking of leaving them in some bleach-water over night? But would this damage then?
And have sprayed all the parts cleaned so far with wd40 to leave an till I start putting them back on.

Amazing what a bit of elbow grease can do and it hasn't taken you long to do a very impressive job on the chrome bits.
Are you going to re-spray the frame etc? Looking forward to seeing further progress.

Oxalic Acid for the chrome bits. Google it
