Cheap Alpinestars

A friend of mine has asked me to look out for a decent commuting bike for him and I managed to pick this ASR120 up for £40 this week (it is a bit of a gate but he's 6'4'' ).

It's in great condition, with hardly a mark on it and not a bit of rust. It's not the lightest of bikes, and I know it's not a top end model because of the Altus kit on it.

I'm guessing early 90's, but can anyone let me know the year of this bike please.

I'd say mid 90's, just before they pulled out of the MTB market. Could be wrong though, often am.

That Altus is in 1995 and 1996 Shimano catalogues.

The up-spec bikes in the catalogue would have had the same frame. Throw some LX on it for durability/better shifting, a better seat, and go.

They had quite a few frames.
The lowest two models were part cro-mo, then above that was the full cro-mo front triangle, then full cro-mo the the double (or triple) butted frames were LX / XT IIRC.

Thanks for the info. Luckily I don't have to do anything to it - my mate's just ridden off on it, as pleased as punch!
