i went to remove the freehub body with my trusty monstrous allen key
only to find that clearly shimano decided to have some sort of splined tool
for removal of this body! does anyone have any idea where i'd find such
a device?

Need clearer pictures but it could be a splined bit

or a Torx bit

My guess would be splined

thanks for those photos. the splined areas look a lot broader than a torx key - almost the same kind of profile as you'd find on a cassette removal tool. never seen anything like it but then my mechanic skills went only as far as 7 speed back in the day!

i contacted an old friend of mine who works at the largest bike shop in the country and he says that he thought that the tool looked familiar but he certainly hasn't see it for many years!!
