Here's my bike hauler,

a 1987 Volvo 745GLEa (B230E, ZF4HP22 auto gearbox), three owners from new and 105k on the clock.

Have other classics, and the 700s are the last true classic Volvos.

Jon (aka Roadking).

What about the 900s and S / V 90 series?

I always fancied getting an S/V90 3.0 auto. Seem a bit thin on the ground, these days, though.

The S/V90 range are good cars of course, but not designed by a Swede, hence I don't regard them as truly classic Volvos.

I have high regard for the 700 range (especially those with the four cylinder 2.3 litre engine) as they are essentially simple cars, little to go wrong and hence durable. The six cylinder cars are by their very nature more complex, with more electronics and electrics.

The 745 is my bike hauler and winter car, I drive a classic Mercedes (500E) in the summer.

Cheers, Jon.

They were just facelifted 900s series, though - which were very closely related to the 700 series?

850s and classic 70 series were also very robust, pretty bombproof, and the i5 engine was very strong, and had a cool engine note to boot.

Volvo timeline -

1982 700 series launched (the 764 was first)
1984 740 series launched
1985 745/765 series launched
1990 700 ends and 940/945/960/965 launched (simply put, a redesigned 700: redesigned by a Brit - Peter Horbury)
1994 960 launched, largely redesigned architecture taking the 960 more upmarket
1997 S90/V90 launched, last of RWD Volvos.

I've kept the timeline focused on the RWD cars. The 700 series was the last of many Volvo's (Amazon, 140/160 series, and the 200 series) designed by Volvo's ace designer Jan Wilsgaard - hence my original comment.

Yes, yes, yes, I get all that - but simply put, the 900 series was an evolution of the 700 series - it was hardly an entire redesign, same for the S/V90 series, they were just a facelift of the 900 series. The 90 series was the last true RWD Volvo. And it was only step changes, really back to the 700 series.

The 800 series, true enough, was a real departure from the 700s and 900s.

But making out that there was some significant change betwixt 700s and 900s is disengenuous. Yes, there were "improvements" more use of technology. But accepting that, also very close in heritage.

Jon.

Was it designed?!

My 760 covered 60K with the original owner from 89 to 93. Since 1993 the car was pampered. It covered only 30K and it never saw rain. There are no traces of use or aging. No dents, scratches or cracks in the leather. I bought it in concourscondition. With me it will cover a bit more miles, but not much. I am looking forward to visit events like Volvo club meetings or going to abroad vintage bicycle rides, like the Retro Ronde v Vlaanderen. I will take good care of it. Next thing to do will be rust prevention treatment with FluidFilm and Mike Sander products.

My better half's Alfa Spider has had a little work done, don't ask.

No really... 'DON'T BLOODY ASK'!
