Hi

Recently I've been considering to change the bottom tube gear sifters to brifters. However it seems like I have to get a completely new group set. Currently I have a 1980's Maruishi road bike and its group set is Shimano EX age. Can any one give me advice on how to change to brifters with out buying a new group set and without replacing the front, back derailleur and the crank set?

Impossible. All I will say is you're more likely to need a new freewheel than chainrings.

The number of speeds 7/8/9? that the Exage set uses may determine whether or not you will have to upgrade derailleurs etc.

Sorry I missed a out a key information, I'm going to swap the old wheels with new wheels, which has 10 speed free wheel on it. Thus is it possible then to change it in to brifters ?

The FW spacing would have to match the shifters. So if you are using Shimano shifters you should have a Shimano FW. I suspect you will need to check on VElobase to see what shifters will work with the FW you have.
