Just make sure your shoes have stiff soles. Did a 25mile ride in pumps and my feet ache something awful.

Good point.

I still have to find some shoes (size 42 / 8 ) and then finally, once the bike is done, an appropriate jersey and cap.

I've got wooden soled Detto's and the cleats are fixed with nails.

I think they are great and I get the strangest looks, not only from my wife (I'm used to that now) but also from the hoards of Sunday carbon roadies that appear when the sun shines.

Can I add a related question, now that this one has been answered? I know what a quill stem is but why is it called a quill?

I think the original stems were cut an angle with an angled wedge..........rather like the cut end of a quill pen?
