Braking technique - Right or Wrong?

Generally both, with the appropriate amount of force applied to each dependant on:

ground conditions, gradient, body position on the bike, tyres, level of grip, level of terror  Blah Blah Blah

to be honest it's never the same twice as there's too many variables, basically do what you feel is right at the time and hope it works out.

Most important thing is to have brakes where you feel comfortable with their capabilities and ride accordingly. Most important thing is don't lock up!

The worse the terrain gets, the more difficult modulation becomes.

Brake for the obstacle, not through it. You should have your line and speed set before you hit the rough stuff. Front brake to slow you, rear to help turn in.
