Recommend an engineering company please.

Hi I'm looking into getting a suspension fork steerer replaced. I heard Mike Burrows engineering were good but it seems they have closed down.

Can anybody recommend a Cycling specialist engineering company for this in UK/Europe ?

i'd say we need more info, meaning, what fork? will it need threading etc?

for example, if you need 1 1/8 ahead and it's a bomber then windwave can do it no problem, if it's a rockshox mag needing thread then a local engineering company might be a better option.

which crown assembly and what size steerer and thread or lack of it will make a difference to what people recommend, also location may be important, local frame builders may be able to help etc.

Thanks, it's a Manitou 3 crown/steerer with oem 1 1/8th threaded steerer inserted which is too short. Would be happy with a new 1 1/8th threadless xl or longer threaded. Which ever is easier/safer. Read a lot about crown failure so hoping to get a specialist who's done it a few times before  :D

I think most in this position search eBay and eventually find something that will work. I'm sure you know that manitou crowns for 1/2/3 and others all are interchangeable. Somebody on here also replaced a steerer in a crown that was press fit. I think he just did it with a local machine shop... Yell.com will get you one of these near you.

As I think you know I've sourced a new steerer from Germany. A guy on eBay.de will custom cut you one to your length and threaded or unthreaded but think its 80euros plus that doesn't get it press fitted into your crown.

One other option is to talk to Dave Yates. Frame builder. He might cut off the old one and weld on a new one. He's had a few years in the bike business and I'd trust it if he said it'd work.

Hi Joe,

Yeah been waiting for one the right length for months ! They are either 15mm too short, look like the last rider had a head-on with it or the right length but based in the US. A lovely one went last night but at ~ £200 with import charges seems silly.

Il just keep looking

Bit worried about any weld on job as I'm a lot heavier than the last time I rode a bike like I stole it.

Il give Dave Yates a bell anyway. I have seen the legendary Mike Burrows handywork doing this with my own eyes and its awesome. Pity he seems to have retired.

Any recommendations for a supplier of an 1 1/8th Alloy threadless steerer and locking ring ? May have a go myself using golf club glue, the highest sheer strength stuff and a locking ring. Hummm

A skilled machinist will sleeve it i.e. insert a long tube inside the existing plus extension and drill and weld as required. It will be stronger than a new steerer.

Alternatively use a bbb extender, they work well. I use them and I am well into clyde territory.

The guy on ebay.de sells them, I've bought one thats too long threaded and will cut the thread section off. The one I ordered is 245 with 40mm thread and I need 195 ish. so it should work out. I may then find a locak machine shop to ream the small groove (o-er) at the same height around the bottom and insert the circlip... it'll depend on how i feel once i see it and put it together. I'm sure a machine shop could do you a new circlip, its only a piece of metal.

Otherwise the post above us good advice.description of what a frame builder can do. It doesnt have to be Yates, just somebody with a bike knowledge and theres a few small builders around in the UK if you look. Usually they are road bike builders traditionally.

Good luck and post up progress. I'll share a pic of the steerer I've ordered if it ever shows from germany. ;)

Where in the UK are you? I've got an amazing machine shop round the corner from me.

Alternatively have a look at Cofa Engineering, I've yet to use them but I've got some CNC work for them once I finally get my design drawn up.

Dude, check out this: 261289639217

  Looks like I'm building it from the ground up B.M.F

I'm based in Hitchin or N Lond but don't mind a bit of a travel. Lets see what happens.

Bull pup quote "A skilled machinist will sleeve it i.e. insert a long tube inside the existing plus extension and drill and weld as required. It will be stronger than a new steerer."

Would love to see pictures or a video of what they do.

What's a BBB's extender ? I used to be fluent in bike years ago, slowly its all coming back

Thanks for the feedback guys :)
