North Shore Retro Ride

The pics without the bike in are particularly spooky. Blair Witch meets Deliverance meets Wrong Turn

so also dangerous Dan and Froriders are RETRO , tick tock the time is passing

spent some hours watching those videos

after 15 years those wood buildings are still impressive

Yeah the Fro Riders formed in 1997, and the likes of Digger started building in 1984.

I certainly found some short comings in the bike the other day when it came to riding gnarlier trails! So out went the M730 crankset with huge rings and I raided my parts bin and installed an M737 unit with eNvy / Blackspire rings. I did pick up a Damage Control bashring yesterday but it needs some 'machining' or attacking with a file to make it fit. Sorry, but M730 pedals suck when things get steep and deep so my NRG Hippy Killers went on today.

In contrast I rode the North Shore's newest trail today. The bike was a total hoot! Bench cutting has finally arrived on the Shore so the trails were pretty fast and flowy, but still with some steep sections, riding through trees etc to catch you out.

Gives me the colliwobbles...
Is Dangerous Dan still around?

He's not far away. He lives on Bowen Island, a short ferry ride away from the North Shore. He still rides stuff like this WTF:

I think Dangerous Dan should be renamed Deranged Dan!! I found my entire body tensing up at a few bits in that, especially the stuff around the 2'00" mark.

A bit colder today! Plus a bit higher up though (above 7th Switchback on Fromme for those who know it):

Huh, I haven't been on the shore for a while, but I'm surprised to see a trail like flying circus in that condition. I never had the guts or skill to ride that stuff, but I figured the younguns still were.

The current generation tends to prefer faster flowy stuff (like I do...), plus the land owners don't take too kindly to people building death traps in the sky any more, so it's all resulted in much of the really insane older stuff just rotting away. Some of the more 'normal' trails like Ladies Only are still going strong, and Digger can be found most days working his magic somewhere on the mountains.

Looks beautiful :)

7 th heaven or seven switchbacks has the trail where I saw first hand how devastating bad trail building can be. There were sections of hillsides that had washed away simply because the trail had dropped straight down. Looked like someone was doing pressure wash gold mining.
My attitude really changed that day.
