Painting over nickel plate- How to?

So if I wanted to paint over a nickel plated frame or component, how is it done?
I heard just rubbing down and painting may cause the paint to peel- also found some info on tinternet where some guy recommends putting the nickel plated item in a fire first! Hmmm not too keen on that idea :shock: - any help much appreciated.

I can't be the only one thinking it so I may as well be the first to express:

Nickel plating is so beautiful why would one paint it?

Dude it's going to need blasting with sand first to get a key.. then you should be good to go.

I'm thinking of having some forks done... But after polishing them i might change my mind.

Cheers fellas, polishing much easier I'm sure. Yes the nickel is a thing of beauty but if rusty and flaky, not so. Anyways question answered- blast it first, Ta

I've red that there is a primer expecially for the nikel, but do not know much. Painting on nikel was used in italy by road frame builders, as pinarello... they use to leave nikel color the stays, conjunctions and paint the tubes..

Mongoose did it on their bmx frames back in the early days. They just shot tinted clear right over the polished nickel finish.
