Buying a light bike for around £200 - what to look for

Lets get the questions over and done with, I'll help look and I'm sure some of the others here will help too.

Maximum price?

What size bike do you want?

Do you want an Italian, French, British, German, Dutch or American etc. bike?

Aluminium or steel ?

Clinchers or Tubs?

How many gears?

Mudguards, rack etc.

Red, Green, Blue etc.

Do you want to look like a racer or a granddad ?

Mountain or road?

Answer that and don't rush in to it :D

Personally, I'd avoid classic french for a commuter. Bearings take some hammer in our British weather and you would need to source french thread bottom brackets and headsets - not impossible, but not low priced, readily available Wiggle et all stocks.

Like I said, a personal opinion for a workhorse bike
