Is the V brake kit just a couple of studs? I'll have a look tomorrow to see if I've still got any - if I have, you can have them for bugger all.
 
No, that's not the same as I have, which is just the two studs to screw into the sliders, which already have the spring retainers cast-in.
Mine are from '05 marathons.

Do you run spacers under your stem? If so you can always remove one or two, if not then you may be able to get away with running it 10mm too short dependant on the stem you are using.

If you have any spacers under your stem then remove them and see if that will compensate for the short steerer.

I believe you can get steerer tube extenders, but that will add more cost, and weight, but could get you out of a sticky situation.

And always measure twice, buy once ;)
