Why did e-stay bikes die out ?

Lots of modern designs based on years of research and development other than full sus dont use estay design which suggests good reasons for their demise.

You might be surprised how much research and development in the bike world seems to rediscover things rather than make real progression. New materials, of course, can offer the chance to revisit things which were previously thought to be too heavy or otherwise impractical. This early design for bicycle suspension looks rather familiar for example:

and full suspension from 1891 - with something like a e-stay design:

I fully expect e-stay designs to make at least one come back (and go out of fashion again) within my lifetime. Ditto biopace chain rings.

Fatbike estays... As if saltyman needs more excuses to get another...

And others if you search

29er estay designs...

Just need a 650b one then it would be trendy.

Of course still going strong and flexing like hell now.. This is where its found it niche.

In the words of a Uk frame Builder BITD.
"E-Stays create as many problems as they solve".

ah...I can see it now, 26->29->27.5... then when everyone has one of those, some variation (i'll be 26er) Estay, the marketing blurb will read "with new carbon technologies we can now make the estay design work...blah blah".
Will be the next big thing (and will of course have a 1.5inch to tapering to 1inch bottom headtube for optimum stiffness and vibration damping...

I have a modern estay hybrid, a Decathlon Triban Trail 5. It has clearance for 29er tyres too but more road oriented geometry. Think it'll make a good on/off road tourer.
Possibility of bashing my ankles pedalling it though !
