pretty sure I read about it here - there was a series of posts on how to remove steel part e.g. a broken steel bolt from aluminium alloy by chemically dissolving it

anyone remember this?
what was the chemical involved? and did it need electricityy?

Re: help - find post about removing steel parts from alumini

You can use sulphuric acid[battery acid], I use an aluminium welding rod as an anode and a car battery/charger as a power source. I was told to use Alum, I bought a little box of it[in Tescos] and intended to try it when I last had to remove a broken tap, but didn't.

Yes it was ALUM and no electricity is need, well not for electrolysis anyway.
It's needs to be heated to boiling for a few days in my experience!
Also it will destroy anodising.
