1997 Kona Cinder Cone...UPDATE....FINISHED!

Hello and welcome to my '97 Cinder Cone build thread. First though, a pic of my old Lanai. I'd had it for a few years, and upgraded it over and over, until it was in danger of becoming a pig in lipstick. Therefore, the only thing to do was go retro, and steel.

The CC frame came about after I placed an ad in the wanted section of RB. It was listed as having a small dent in one seatstay. When it arrived, the dent turned out to be bigger than expected. Knowing that the strength of the frame wouldn't be affected, I filled and sanded the dent.

The next problem was matching the paint, so I could respray the back end. However, since the CC is finished in what's best described as a dark neon bluey purple (or purpley blue)in a satin finish, this turned out to be beyond the motley collection of part used rattle cans I had in the shed. I did have some Halfrauds Satin Black though....

Next up, build time!

Update time. Most of the parts are from the Lanai, apart from some M750 XT that I got from the for sale section on rb. In these pics it has wheels borrowed from one of my other bikes; the wheels it will eventually have are Mavic Xm 319 on M750 hubs. It turned out it was gonna take far longer than I thought to build the wheels as well as the bike.

Hi folks. This is the CC in its first completed incarnation. I actually finished it a few weeks ago(too much going on, not enough spare time to be able to post on here), just in time for Le Grand Fromage's gates ride. Apart from a rattly old front mech that I thought would be ok, it performed faultlessly. It's quick, light(ish) and handles brilliantly, just like steel Kona's should. I've included a pic of it during the aforementioned ride.

As I've already mentioned, I have a better pair of wheels for it which should hopefully be finished soon, and save around a pound in rotating weight. I also bought some M750 XT cranks, which will also lop off some more weight. So, it's finished, but a work in progress as well. I'll post updates as and when they happen.

Hi folks. Finally got my wheels built, and on the bike. The front is radially spoked, and the rear is three cross on the drive side and radial on the other. I replaced the Sugino cranks with a really nice M750 XT chainset.

Whilst not exactly a period build, most of it is from between '98 and '03. The modern content consists of: tyres, rims, spokes, slow-release skewers, seatpost and the smallest bar ends i've ever seen.

The finished weight is a shade under 26.5lbs, which i'm really happy with. Considering the Conti Race Kings are the wire bead version, there's probably about half a pound to be saved there. Turns out the Continental website is extremely optimistic about the weight of these, as they're at least 100g each heavier than listed. Still fast and grippy though.

Hi - nice bike . I am in process of similar project upgrading a Cindercone from 1996 . It looks like a more up to date stem on the bike. Did you have to use a converter to allow this stem to be used or were the forks long enough not to require one? I have some pace rc36 evo 2 forks I want to use but they are too short .. guessing I will have to stay with the original quill stem.. any advice appreciated
