1st (ok 2nd) of August - summer's running out type panic

two things of the many things I had in mind

1) West Highland Way - a few of my local laddies have been talking about, train up, ride down (1 probably two days, as we ain't done mush this summer). any of you lot ridden it? what's it like?

2) the Merrick - Kaiser mentioned this somewhere earlier this year. anyone fancy an afternoon / evening jaunt?

My friend has done the west highland way on bike - consensus is north to south although the north end of loch lomond might still not be rideable, he did it over 4 days the other way, with huge quantities of beer and 2 very unfit mates.
