Cycle Speedway

Hi Trebz

I had a couple of seasons riding cycle speedway in the early nineties. It's great fun and teaches you just how much physical contact you can get away with on a bike witout crashing. On a track that small there's no such thing as a clean pass!

Back then nearly every cycle speedway bike I saw was an "Ace Ultra" made here in the Midlands by a guy called Mike Baugh. He has relocated to a different town but still has a shop http://www.aceultracycles.co.uk/General/about-us.html although I don't know if he still has any current links to the sport. If you're looking for retro then this would be the way to go although it seems (as Al pointed out) that Archie Wilkinson bikes are at the forefront of cycle speedway now.

I don't know what's current but I found this website which has a bit of info, especially in the "pits" section http://62.239.47.80/CycleSpeedwayTrack/index.html . I have seen the odd bike come up on Ebay but never watched one to see what sort of money you'd be talking.

Below is the only thing I have left from my dabble in cycle speedway. I rode for Sandwell, mainly the "B" team, but was part of the under 21 team that made the national final. Sounds quite impressive but we were absolutely thrashed by the winning team!

I just found the Archie Wilkinson website, some of the bikes look great and very cheap.

I'll still be wanting to build my own based on a Retrobike. I have a spare GT Richter frame that would suit.

I also have a 1991 Kona Lava Dome pub bike that would make a great doner.

:)

A little more info for any curious parties.

I'm building a Cycle Speedway bike based on a GT Richter frame I have.

It looks quite exiting at the higher levels !

Yes please keep us updated with your progress and photos of your bike, etc.

Get plenty of plasters in stock too, you'll be doing a bit of crashing (and not just in the car park, yes I remember you from the Peaks ;) ).

Just ran across a video on Cycle Speedway, I had never heard of this before, but what a hoot. The video was from 2008 and I spotted at least one vintage GT in the line up.

Ace Ultra bikes seemed to be the most popular choice in the early nineties when I rode and they all sported a triple triangle like the GTs (see photo above although there were variations).

You're right it is a hoot, wish I had more time on my hands, I'd love another go. There's loads of good meetings on Youtube even a crash compilation http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TbxF7weyyFI

Anyway now the thread has had a bump, any updates Trebz?
