Specialized Shark Fin re-manufacture ?

hey kane
i like your MAX frame, looks awesome
should build into a top FSR

looks like the bolt hole is a bit out for that 98 stay
thats why we need to be pretty much spot on

if you could do this on the MAX stay

if your still out the elysarian
look what i found

cold forged it is, 6061 alloy
ya' can't beat that
it's an elegant design this fin
all we can do is copy
unless you've got a 100 tonne press in the back shed

here is my prototype

and fitted for testing

also can someone weigh their fin, so we can compare weights
and the web thickness too would be good to know, and the pivot mounting too

to not fat matt
inovation thats what we need, how did you mount to the pivot bolt?

proflex just hold on for a bit till we get things sorted

I sold that frame along time ago, I just still have pics of it.
As for the hole I drilled in the stay on my '97/'98.
It was where it needed to be to get the correct mounting for my discs.

Hi hARro, If you want to improve on the Spesh design, you could change it to directly use post-mount.
The dimensions you need are here:
http://www.peterverdone.com/wiki/index. ... e-Spec.gif

That way you can reduce weight and some complexity (the off-set), but you would need to drill and tap the M6 mounting holes and get the mounting face reasonably perpandicular!

Ps. looking good. Recycling metal?

yeah i thougth about that, saw this pic a while back
you'll have to make disk size specific fins

the offset is a bit of a problem,
welding solves both ends

but i'm thinking about how to make it without welding
using 40x40x5 angle, and bolting the offset flange.
or maybe just bending plate, but it'll have to be heated,
a bit tricky at best,
but it won't look as good as the original

i'm guessing the original's weight at about 70g
my steel one is 250g

ps sorted the stay bolt problem
rotate the bolt loose the washer and it'll clear
at a closer look thats what the boffins out there have done

keep the info coming

This sort of thing adapts post-mount to post-mount for larger sizes. ;)

Out of interest, why are you looking to build without welding?
For the brake boss mount, you might be able to cut the plate into a sort of "P" shape and fold the tab through 90 deg.
If you had access to a fly press you could make up some simple tooling to put the off-set in?
You could probably drop 1/3 of the weight with stratigicaly drilled holes!

Do you have any pics form the top?

Chain stay is wrong to be a '99, that is a '97 or '98 that has been drilled.

Looks like mine, but it's not.

My 99 Elite came with a seat stay just like this with a pre drilled hole.

It is Identical to my 98 GC stay but the 98 Stay does not have the pre drilled hole (i have both in the man-cave)

Now i figure that somewhere down the line its possible that the rear triangle on my bike was damaged and replaced with something else, but the hole in mine has not been ghetto drilled, it had black powdercoat inside the hole, and still had the original decals on it (but has since been resprayed)

Its definitely identical to my 98 one as i had to use the 98 mech hanger after i snapped the 99 one.

I prefer the 98 style chainstays though, much beefier than the 99 versions with the daft hole near the BB (that always cracks) my bike also came with the beefy 98 style chainstays and they are also identical to my 98 GC chainstays.

yeah but.......
can you post a pic of the measurement to the dropout centerline

not that pic, the hole is offset to the fin hole by about 3mm????
the 99 one...
this hole is the crittical dimension

this being the remanufacture thread, we have to think about
all the possible ways and ease of manufacture, materials, how many etc.

i hav'nt got any industrial might, in my DIY Backyard Engineering Dept.
i have got my you byeewt steerer tube press

there is also 3D printing.......????????

this is why i need the measurement
not a lot of room down there
@ 20 mm from the dropout
i can allow an extra 1 to 2mm, but will it fit existing stays?????

at the moment i hav'nt got a disk rear hub yet

you guys got'a be a bit more help
i'm do'in all the work

for the moment, next i'll post the details for a welded version with 2mm allowance, and it can be drilled to suit the frame to be mounted on
that'll be good for ya' proflex

am also working on a fully bent 4mm aluminium prototype
