Airborne 2000 Lucky Strike DB Rebuild

The tyres "hairs" I use as an incentive to get out more. Sooner they go you know its being used enough. Loving the thread as I did your pro flex and marin bear valley..
 
The tyre hairs only went because the back ones were rubbing the frame - and it would have been wrong to not have the front matching ... :LOL:

Another piece of the puzzle turned up today - NOS USE post clamp :



I know CRC had these for a while but if you compared it to the standard part, the newer ones are a piss poor fit in the post and rattle around in the hole - the old ones are a nice tight fit ;-)

To be sent for black ano soon :D

Not the type of porn to normally come from Holland ... some bike porn ... :LOL: 640mm Ti risers & 90mm Ti stem :







Both items very nicely made and dressed, the bars are surprisingly thick - compared to my Titec's and the Ti flexstem :



The stem is nicely made - compared to my Ti Titec and Ti Clark Kent.

The items scrubbed up well, if I wasnt blasting them to match the frame I could have easily had them looking like new (Other than my grubby paw prints :LOL:) :





The shim is a standard Titec unit that I have shortened to match the stem :D

Only Dads Ti road bike, so no direct comparison – all ‘my’ bikes (until now) have been steel :D

Anyone got any ideas on the manufacturer of the bars and stem ?

I weighed them (Bar = 293g / Stem + replacement Ti bolts and washers = 129g / Shim = 6g) so a saving of 45g over the Titec bars, Titec stem & Titus bar ends they are replacing :D

Pretty sure the stem is a J&L import and the bars are Titec Hell Bent (Or made by the same people who make the Titec Hell Bent) : viewtopic.php?f=1&t=265249

I have just packed this lot up ready for anodising in black (By Rampage – a member on here) :



Only one set of post clamp parts are for the Airborne though along with the jockey wheel bearing covers :D

The small holes in the saddle cradle were put in by me to suit the wires used for the anodising process (the area that makes the electrical connection / doesn’t get anodised). By putting the hole in the middle I can control where the connection point is and keep it hidden from eye. I will leave the hole open as a vent on the Marin (no mud on that one !) but seal it with a black vinyl dot on the Airborne to keep crap out of the seat tube.

I have done this as you can see the connection point on this part that I had done for the Marin, the darker the colour, the more obvious it is …

The other post clamp parts are spares for this build and the Marin, the odd bits at the top are Ringle stem parts – for a future build … ;-)

The post and bar shim didn't have a very good surface finish and both are quite visable when fitted ... :? The post shim is seen through the frame slot and the stem shim through the hole in the front. The post shim just had a rough finish from the machining and the bar shim had been scratched.

So for a couple off quid of eBay I picked up a sheet of 3M carbon film and did this :



It looks really quite cool and masks the visable parts well :



It's hard to photograph though !

The white bits either side of the carbon patch on the stem shim are a very thin double sided tape to act as a third hand / hold the shim in position whilst the stem is tightened. It's sticky stuff so I think I will try in on the head badge to. :D

I have finally decided it's having Grab On MTN 1 (I think !) grips on it :



I had a choice of Ules, Porkipaws & Oury's. The Grab On's came from another forum user, fitted but not used. I found when I (trial !) fitted them that one had a funny lump in it, I tried them a few times and kept getting the same issue ? I ended up finding that one of the grips had been nicked a little on the inner bore, you couldn't see it when the grip was off (Unless you squeezed the grip to open it up) but it caught and folded itself back on itself when I fitted the grip - a bit of rubber glue soon sorted it and povided a invisable repair :D

Just ordered the last lot of Ti bolts from Toronto Cycles - the ones I forgot to order last time ... :oops: :LOL:

Started to sort through the brakes today in preparation for the build ... :shock: finally ... :oops:

I was just going to swap the pads and the hardware over but found that the Shimano assembly line had been a bit ham fisted with when fitting the pins. I managed to flat them off though and match the standard finish :



All done :



Standard Shimano compound v Kool Stop salmon
Steel and ally v Ti
Old v New :

yup, followed the last ten pages marvelling at the build... and then discovered I had a hand in a part of it! Ok, so it wasn't very successful but it all worked ok in the end ;)

This is a mad build - looking forward to the full build... so how many times do you think you've fitted parts then removed them, saving the full build until all is perfect? :D
