Hi there , Mike here . New to Retrobike , having got myself a '97 (I think !) Gary Fisher Mamba .Stripped it down , sorted it and now re-discovering old bridleways I'd previously used , not having ridden off road for around a decade . Previously a road racer / time triallist , living in Worthing area West Sussex . Will be looking to upgrade chainset when original Shimano Alivio one wears out . Want to keep the old look with an LX or something similar . Can anyone advise me on availability of replacement rings for oldsville chainsets ? Thanks , Mike .

Hi,

You can still get chain rings for old chainsets, most are standard sizes and most older 5 arm/hole MTB chainsets had a 110mm BCD (Bolt Circle Diameter). Here's how you can measure it: http://www.bikeman.com/bicycle-repair-t ... inring-bcd

Spa Cycles do plenty of chainrings: http://www.spacycles.co.uk/products.php?plid=m2b0s0p0, but once you know the size you need you can also try Google to see if there are any deals, I recently bought some on sale ate On-One: http://www.on-one.co.uk/i/q/CRFSAGSI/fs ... _chainring

Welcome Mike.

You have two choices in front of you; leave this place now, and forget you were ever here, or embrace RetroBiking and resign yourself to the fact that within six months you will have more bikes, frames and parts than you ever thought humanly possible, and you will be broke.

As for chainrings; ebay is pretty good, with plenty of traders selling NOS, Tweeks and UK Bike Store have good selections in all sorts of BCD's and at good prices, and Chain Reaction often have silly sales where certain parts can be picked up for next to nothing, oh and Malcolm at The Cycle Clinic is pretty good and is a forum member (he has a web site, shop and ebay shop, so is not hard to find).

Also, there are a few RB folks in your neck of the woods. Look at the area groups section and you'll find a rowdy group of retrobates (see what I did there?), who will be only too pleased to meet up, outride you and leave you in a panting heap half way around a ride.
