Hi,
I'm rebuilding an old Dawes Ambassador as a summer project. I took apart the bottom bracket today and degreased the innards. It's pretty mucky but seems OK, except for some damage to the spindle. It's pitted at one end at the point the bearings contact (is that called the cone?) for about 45° of the circumference.
Picture below. Upper picture is undamaged side, lower picture shows the damage between the two red arrows.
My question is - is this a dead spindle? It seems like it won't run very smoothly even if repacked with new bearings so should I just get a new one?
Cheers.
