5-6 Speed Chain Question

Just bought a 5/6 Speed 1/2" x 3/32" bog standard chain, but on the packet its says non-indexing.

Fair enough, but how can that be? Surely friction or indexed makes no difference to the chain?

Or am I being thick

It could be the heat :)

Probably just means it has straight side plates rather than the shaped ones that HG chain has?

IIRC though UG chain had straight plates and that worked with indexing BITD...

Uniglide inner plates were straight and the outer plates were cranked. Had nothing to with indexing and more to do with smoothness of shifting over the cogs........

In theory a "click" of an indexed shifter might not throw a "bog standard" chain enough over to catch the next cog, whereas the cranked UG would. Mind you that's clutching at straws because I used UG chains on non-indexed kit when they came out 1n 1978.
