Build my own 6 speed cassette?

Well...I think I would like to have a few gears as ssing 20 miles a day can sometimes get right on my :x particularly if I am overtaken by a hybrid

I may well have a frame to use instead of my ss specific frame. My wheels are Hope and the rear SS...and they are nice wheels and I would pferer not to faff around selling them.

So...how can I make up a nice cassette to fit the shorter Hope freehub, which I believe could take 6 cogs?

Any ideas peeps?

Or buy a 7 or 8 speed and just use some of the cogs? (option to switch around on the ratios there too without the need for more outlay)

I've had a play with this before.

9 speed PG990s and XT770(?) both work well using the "block" of cogs. IIRC they both needed a small amount of filing.

There I a useful thread on MTBR re this .... I will dig it out.

Thanks chaps...I think if I use a bigger front ring that I have now and use a Sram 970DH cassette which is simply a set of cogs and spacers I will achieve the ratio's I am looking for. But I like ssing so I may do nothing!

Been toying with the same idea. The SS freehub body is narrower so the wheel has less dish (stronger) and it improves chain clearance for big tires. There's indeed quite a few threads on MTBR, here's a few

this link is a very detailed guide with numbers for cogs and spacing data:

My aim is not actually creating a big range, rather an SS with "options". I like SSing, when I go out on my own or with my 11y old son it is always on a Singlespeed. I'd like to take it out on the sunday morning group ride too if it wasn't for the fast farmers tracks connecting the proper trails. All I need is a few gears for a more manageable rpm at say 30ish kph (20mph). I know I could also stretch to lighter climbing gears, but hey, Holland IS flat.

Compared to my typical 38x 19/20 SS gearing I would go for a 14-15t smallest and then build it to 20something in 4 steps? 14-16-18-21-24? I can do 8v or 9v spacing, thumbie or trigger and I don't need the 6th cog, maybe a 14-17-20-24t set would do the trick with 4 speeds. Quite a dedicated set-up, purpose built for my local tracks. Now looking to assemble something close to this without reverting to all individual cogs and spacers.

Enjoy!!

Dead topic kick. Went with 5 cogs in 9-speed guise.

Ended up using a 9-speed SRAM Cassette, the centre piece is a 15-17-20-23 block of 4 and with a single 13 that makes for a 5speed racer. The Industry 9 Singlespeed rear hub will take the 5 cogs and one spacer plus lockring. Rigged up a 970 XTR mech with a bar end shifter on a Paul's thumbie, perfect. All I need now is a longer limit screw to protect me from lifting the chain over the largest cog.

I rode this on the sunday group ride, turns out with a 38t front ring this is all the gears I will likely need in Holland. Plus I have the option to swap the 13 cog for a 28 at the other end of the cassette in a few minutes.

Enjoy!!
