we have some failry decent summer temperatures, nothing special and the rail system grinds to a halt ... ok, some parts are on a go slow.

Network Rail blamed antiquated wooden “bearers” used on the line which are less able to adapt than the more modern concrete foundations when rising temperatures causes the track to expand, and even buckle.

errr...... so these sleepers have been around for many years and we have had higher temperatures, why all of a sudden at the lines buckling? bizarre.

They should have been there in the summer of '76

I don't remember ever having trouble catching the train to school or it ever having to reduce it's speed then before the holiday's but I do remember the neighbours kid frying little frogs on the concrete.

Why do they always show Primrose Hill when they talk about the weather? Same back when the snow really hit London. We were making snowmen and this guy stuck his camera up our noses, so we started pelting him with snowballs!

Perhaps Network Rail are softening us up for the next huge tax payer hit?

there are a couple of possible explanations, one is that to cut costs they've laid long welded rail on the old wooden sleepers without taking the different expansion rates into account, the other is a phenomenon known as "creep" - where the rails move over time & close up the expansion joints.

either way someone wasn't doing their job right.

The good news is that due to lengthening of the track, the line that used to end at Dover now finishes 5 miles further on in Deal. :p
