While I love their bikes, their history and the way they ride, (I've had 3 over the years) even at their height they were a pretty shambolic company, with Andy being reclusive and his mum, Enid, running the front of house in her own special way.
TBH I was suprised to hear that they lasted that long.

All the best,

yes - had the same experience - really unreliable service and even irritable with customers. Had great potential and could have flourished.

I must have caught them on a good day ! although it did take five phone calls to finally get hold of Andy ! :D

I don't want to seem too misty-eyed about the period, or the quality of service, but I think this is what makes us love the small British builders so much more than the big Marin county guys. These bikes were individually built, bespoke, following on from generations of builders, with no eye on the mass market, or possibly little more than simply paying the bills.

In a way our builders seem doomed to fail in the long run, without the business acumen, and some might say sheer balls, of the US companies who generally get much less love over here, such as Gary Fisher, Salsa, Klein or Bontrager.

Our guys were just as original and forward looking in their developments, but never got the chance to be bought out by the big guys and farmed out to Taiwan, while the figureheads age gracefully while making quasi-historical videos on YouTube and passing their time out on the sunlit trails of the world or glad-handing it around the bike shows.

Just imagine how brilliant it would have been for the UK mountainbike industry if we could now have a Pre/Post-Trek Overbury's argument instead of Klein...

Ho hum, onward and upward....

All the best,
