1993 Cannondale M500, Now finished!! Pics page 2

Re: 1993 Cannondale M500, Facebook find.

The previous owner tells me he went all round Europe on this, and upon return, took the wheels off and left in his shed, they have moved house a few times, and this bike has remained in this state for most of those 15 years. It has not fared to badly if indeed the story is true.... Those tyres still have the hairs on them!

It's not far off original. It has a flexstem which I may leave on for period upgrade correctness (although the bung is done i fear), unless I found an original stem. It has had some v brakes fitted at some point, along with some shonky wellgo spds. I have some Altus canti's in a box, but I'm gonna have to hunt out some of those rocker doodads. Also, it has been upgraded with 8 speed stx rc shifters, but, wait for it... Still has the original 7 speed cassette.

It has a saddle from the orange that replaced it. The skewers are awol, The seatpost moves freely, wierdly no front mech, and as yet no cracks!! :D

Frame number is 51807922832, which suggests a 93 model with all the tubes stuck together in 92, and it's a confirmed 18"

I took some pictures as it was out of the van after picking up.

I have compiled all the bits I need to get it back to spec below, Just going to bring this one back to life, spit, polish, patina and all, as close to original spec as possible.
If anyone has any of the bits below or can point me the right way that would be great.

The shopping list:

Tioga Surefoot 3 pedals. (or maybe some old spds)
Ritchey Z Max Blackwall tyres
2 of those cantilever rocker things
A10 Front mech
Vetta Lite gel saddle
Exage rapidfire plus shifter / brake combo
Some nice grips, Ritchey true grips?
Shimano skewers

Re: 1993 Cannondale M500, Facebook find.

So the wee trek got sold on, bringing this beast down to a tenner. Starting the hunt now for parts and it will get a clean up at the weekend.

Re: 1993 Cannondale M500, Facebook find.

Had a bit of a clean up on the frame, and stripped down all the bits. New flat roof has stopped play for a while, and I'm still hunting a last few bits n pieces.

Overall the frame is in very good shape with no real corrosion or damage. The paint has a fair few dings, but that sparkly glint is still great in the sun.
Have a few parts in now, so will look to hang some bits back on over the weekend....

In the meantime have a pic or two.

Re: 1993 Cannondale M500, Facebook find.

Done a bit o' work over the weekend. All hubs cleaned, regreased and new bearings etc, headset the same, wheels polished a little and trued up.

Fitted z max's back on and front mech. Drive train all getting cleaned up. On the hunt now for a few remaining bits, but it was nice to get the wheels back on today!

I'll have to get the kurust out for those forks though until I can get another pair.

Cannot wait to ride it now.

Re: 1993 Cannondale M500, Almost done.. Need a seat!

All put back together, thanks everyone who has helped sort bits for it! Just need an early 90's perch, Having a bit of grief finding a Vetta Gel lite, which is what it had, I Karma'd a Rolls on here last year too!

Rides nicely, and all the original components that were on it from 1993 all still function perfectly! (after a bit of greasing etc).

Who needs XT? Altus FTW!

Actually great fun to ride. Took it out a few times over the weekend. Here are some obligatory candid, in the sunshine contrived pictures!!

1993 Cannondale M500, Pretty (90%) close to original spec (yes, Altus). . .

Thanks to everyone who helped out with the missing few bits.

Enjoy.

Aaaah. It's in its natural habitat. It looks ace

With regard to your 'contrived' pics; I hope you at least rode down those steps in the first pic :)

Don't knock the Altus!!

Thanks Saulus....

The steps? Yes, every time. They're out the back of my house, I can see the top of the *cough* footpath from here now! :D

Also, I have no trouble with Altus, I know some on here do, but hey ho, most of them don't ride their bikes either.

I'm going to try to keep my SM700 as close to catalogue spec as possible to capture it as it was intended back in '88.

I didn't realise how much Altus features on some of the bikes I like. Ok it might be heavier and less refined but it is of decent quality. The Canti Brakes have a similar look to higher end versions etc.

Off topic but :

Wow. You have a very nice playground there in mid west Wales then! I ventured into N. Radnor for non bike related reasons a couple of weeks ago and am intending to return with a bike after seeing some really seductive looking trails..

I like it. Ive had a couple bikes with Altus components and yea they are heavier, dont look as nice, etc. At the end of the day they never broke and always worked flawlessly....so in my mind Altus is just fine anyone who would down it is just a snob.
