Hi everyone, please find my llatest retro ride. There is a couple of bits that need sorting (saddle & rear mech), but was all stripped, cleaned and I took the old girl for a 20 mile spin the other day and it's a beaut. I had forgotten how nice a good steel bike is to ride.

Specs:

Peugeot Perthus Pro 753r
All shimano 600 (except hubs and gear levers which are Shimano 'tri-colour'
Wheels Mavic Mach 2 CD 2

Hi there, super looking bike.
I'm rebuilding a 531c Raleigh (at the painter's now) with a similar spec Shimano 600 and Mavic 501s with CD2s. I need some brakes and my question is about the 600 single pivots you have fitted.
Are they up to the job or will I need to compromise performance for period correctness?

wow :shock: don't think i've ever seen a unrestored Perthus in such good condition. That has been very well looked after and is a credit to you. I am currently (STILL!) :oops: restoring a Perthus Pro and if it turns out half as good as yours, i'll be happy.

oh! by the way, love the 979 Vitus with the Dura Ace group as well :D
 
Hi all, many thanks for the kind words. The Vitus was actually my bike from late 1980's, the Peugeot was a more recent acquisition. It was a nightmare trying to get a paint match for the few scratches it had ( just patina, nothing serious). I ended up taking it To Halfords and scooted it through the paint section.

In regards to Shimano 600 brakes, I think the are actually excellent. Very stiff, and frankly compared to some modern brakes I have tried, very good. The issue is using original pads ( I.e over 20 year old brake blocks!) with a new set of pads, they are fine for me!
 
That really is in very good condition, almost as neat as your lawn! Those old shimano brakes were really good, I think the jump made by shimano once they stopped copying 1970's campag ones was significant. It took Campag until dual pivots to get close again. I remember getting a pair of the first Ultegra brakes, worlds apart, descend with confidence :D Also where do i find the 979 with Dura Ace?

Just keep going thru Robster's gallery, its after the last Perthus photo. I'm glad i was a bit cheeky and kept snooping, it was a nice surprise to find the photos of another fantastic bike.

They both deserve a bit of a write up Robster. 2 of (arguably) the best French frames ever IMO with some of Shimano's finest. Lovely pair of bikes. :D

Yes definitely the Vitus deserves a post, in my view that iteration of Dura Ace was the classiest, proper indexing, powerful brakes and great bearings. The Vitus/Dura Ace combo is smart, and as you might know I like a good Vitus equipped with the correct period kit! Top marks Robster for keeping this in great condition. Wish I had looked after mine this well, I raced this stuff but it was trashed after a couple of seasons of heavy racing, also the parts that I rescued died after salt got to it on my winter bikes :facepalm:
