... you can always get caught out.

This morning, before I set off on my ride, I thought I'd paint my gold anodised chainring bolts orange so that they match the rest of the bike (didn't want to fork out for a set of orange chainring bolts (would need 2 sets too); used Tamiya clear orange paint for indicators).

Anyway, for some reason I decided to grab the inner ring only to discover it was lose!! Seems 2 of the bolts had come undone; never had an issue with chainring bolts and never checked them but now I will. A bit of loctite sorted it out.

(apologies for the modern bike content  )

See if you had stuck with a "proper" set of cranks you would have a robust 3 remaining bolts to rely on - not a fear inducing 2.

Loving the paint effect though - thats one to steal for the future. Where do the Rozzers get their "clear blue" touch up from?

Oddly enough on a ride a few weeks back I pointed down to my mates Xt chainset on his Cannondale, 'you've lost a chainring bolt mate', well gutted a Middleburn purple boit had vanished.
