does any1 know how to read the serial number on the gt pantera on the zaskar its pretty straight forward, do the numbers on the pantera actually mean anything. and also any1 any idea where i can get new set of decaLs for pantera al think its a 92/93 pictures here any idea on forks aswell thanks darren http://s1300.photobucket.com/user/darren239/slideshow/

...Although I thought the Pantera is 7005 alu, and it sounds like your frame is cromo steel making it a.. can't remember: too many bloody GTs that look the same. Wait: you mean the FORK is marked as cromo?? I give up.

I'm guessing that the band, the bicycle and the car: http://www.panteracars.com/ are all so named because pantera is Spanish for panther.

That's a first year 1992 Pantera made in Taiwan frame out of 7005 tubing. First mountain bike and second aluminum bike produced by GT in Taiwan. The first bike Gt built in Taiwan was the GT Virage a 700D wheel aluminum frame hybrid.

Usually those 92 Pantera's are sporting a serial number that starts H2
I also have had a frame around a few years and it's on the future build list.

Wondering how you found working with the old stem - I have got my hands on a 1992 Pantera. With the original stem probably rusted in place. Not sure if it's relevant but would you have any advice on getting it off. (So I can work on the headset either new bearings or replacement.)

Again not sure if this is an area of your expertise but am guessing it might be someones:

1) Guessing my bike would have had a Deore LX rear derailleur. Anyway know this for sure?
2) The front brakes are V Brakes which means they can't be original parts as I think these kicked off in about 1996. The rear break is an EXAGE mountain caliper brake.
3) I bought this bike along with two others and a load of bent wheels and old parts for £20 locally. I suspect the Araya silver aluminium rims with quick release are the most likely original wheelset.

It seems that the only stuff I can find online about the bike indicates Suntour components but then some people mention Euro spec was Shimano and I think a lot of the LX parts on the bike were original. Sorry to bump your thread!

another pantera saved from the scrap heap, ive unstuck seat post before so it will be the same as stem, first undo the lock nut top of stem so you can see the threaded steerer then spray sum wd40 in between the stem and fork steerer and see if it soaks down (watch out for the spray flying back in ya eyes ) press slowly where it does soak down get a bit squirted in there and leave for a day or so,then tape the joint up where you sprayed it and turn bike upside down then spray wd40 down the hole that leads to the stem.the idea is to spray against the steerer of the forks so it runs down the side of stem the tapes their so it doesnt run out leave for a couple of days bob the handle bars in and front wheel then see if ya get any movement and keep working it an spray more wd 40 that should do the trick simple bit long winded .

when you bought a bike though you could have different parts fitted .
mine has exage front caliper and rear u brake and hubs,are exage
the shifter combo is lx as is the front mech rear mech and chainset
and the bottom bracket is tange
