Just my era  had a mk1 and mk2 1500 gt , 2 x 1600e s and a mk3 estate 1600xl in daytona yellow !! moved on to escorts and tuned minis after that along with a couple of 1500 allegro, 5 speed too  had an 84 2600 sd1 that my old man gave me after the oil valve stuck and starved the top end and killed it in france !

I preferred the Granada myself... dad had a few over the years, with a break in between for the one car I'd love to own myself: a Rover SD1 3.5 litre V8 (as a caravanner he wouldn't buy anything less than 2 litres), the sound of that engine when you stomped on the accelerator pedal is second only to a Merlin to me!

don't think the wife would consider it a very practical car though!

seem to recall that the rover 2600 was a crap engine from a reliability standpoint... the first car I owned & drove was a mkii fiesta.

I had a '72 Rover P6 V8, last of the proper Rovers before BL came along and started assembling them with water based glue. Not as quick as you'd think and the claimed 135ish BHP sounds a bit smelly to me, and boy did it have a drink problem.

The only Rover that I ever owned was a Rover 45 bought for us by my mother in law, hated it from the moment my hubby brought it home till we scrapped it 6 months later, the modern Rover is really diabolical, ah, but my first car was a 1984 2CV, very fond memories, hilarious going round corners :D

The only Fords I've owned were MK1 and a MK3 Fiestas both of them well enjoyed.

 Always loved the P6 - especially the huge seats!
Lots of insane engineering like inboard discs made them a kind of British Citroen DS.

That is pretty much what they were. Rover bought a DS copied much of its structure and engineering for the P6. Look at the roof line and the windscreen surround, the P6 is almost identical to the DS. Other areas where the DS provided "inspiration" included the inboard discs (as you've pointed out) and the use of a structural "caisson" with unstressed body panels bolted on. If only the DS had been available with a V8 engine! (Although I know a guy who is working on adapting the VW VR6 engine to be retrofittable into the DS).

I've had 5 SD1's too, all series 1, always entertained with which important bit would fall off first whilst driving.

My old man had one of these. New, August 1st 1976. Loved it.

so did mine :) bright yellow with a webasto fabric sunroof, he sold it to a guy down the road who then sold it to his daughters boyfriend, it was around the time there were a lot of local post offices being robbed! usual thing of the police asking for reports of anything suspicous resulted in a raid on our house early one morning! the copper asked do you own a ford cortina? no we sold it to the guy at nos 18.......off they ran.... same question and similar answer later, they all piled back into the vans and shot off to the new owners house
it was there that they didnt go running up the path screaming but walked slowly past the two tone striped escort on the drive and knocked on the door, to be greeted by one of their own  the officers son was 14 and was parking the car all over the village where he lived so that his old man wouldnt find out about it

I swapped a 1980 Cortina MKV 2.0 GL for a set of speakers...

think you got the better end of the deal there

my grandfather had one, it used more oil than the exon valdex spilt and used to burn out spark plugs like crazy! it could have been something to do with his driving style? fourth gear was only to be used if you were overtaking someone! so at 75mph down the motorway he would sling into third and rev the nuts off it for the next 120+ miles
one day it wouldnt start so he asked his mate if he had any idea why? to much back pressure from the exhaust, you need to cut the end off and let it breath better, so off he went with a hack saw and cut the tail pipe off the back box level with the box!
