1990 Marin Eldridge Grade - NeonYellow&NeonPinkSplatter!

@wook: Thanks for the kind words. I'm really happy with the wheels so far. The screw on freewheel still needs to be attached but not before i bought the correct tool to get it off again. And the Ringlé skewers need some change of colour but that will be a thing of the faaar future when i have collected enough stuff to justifiy the madness (which seems pretty normal by todays standarts in here) of paying someone to anodize my bike parts.:)

Finding the right 7-speed freewheel really took me some time and effort. Since i found only scarce info on freewheels here in our forum i thought i'd share some of my own conclusions.
What i learned during my research is if you want a quality 7-speed freewheel and some MTB-friendly grading at the same time you basically have two choices:
Shimano Dura Ace 7400 series and Suntour Winner Pro.
All the french and italian quality ones are either 6 speed or the largest sprocket is something street orientated like 26 teeth. Regina, Atom and so on.
I also checked out some newish Shimano Megarange and Sunrace freewheels and my personal impression is these are made out of cheese. (Of course no offence to the great LGF! :))
And here is a last thought which is no personal experience but more than once i read that if you are looking for a freewheel stay away from 8-speed ones which will often result in a bend hub axle because of their bigger leverage against the hub.

Back in 1991 i used a Dura Ace one which consisted of actually two freewheels merged into one to get the right grading. After a few years of riding the hell out of this freewheel i couldn't get this thing off of my Ringlé rear hub any more. 2 local bike shops said they won't even try it because they would destroy the of course much softer hub during the job. A third shop said no problem and destroyed the freewheel but at least saved the hub.
And this is how my lovely wheelset ended up in my cellar all these passed years.

It took me about 3 years to sort this new freewheel. It is a new old stock Suntour WP-7000 Winpul 7S-S which was made in 1985 or 1986 i guess.
It weighs 545gr and has these sprocket numbers: 12 - 14 - 17 - 20 - 23 - 28 - 34.
It has a BSA/BSC threading and the thread depth is 9 mm.

It arrived a while ago but because i really have no clue if this thing will fit right away i thought it could not hurt to wait a little longer till the matching 4-prong freewheel removal tool (Park Tool FR-3) showed up, which was today. :)

Since it is raining all weekend long i thought it was a good time to clean my crank set and add some colorful parts to it. It is a 175mm PBC Precision MTB Crank Set which i bought back in 1991. It has some battle scars just like myself so no need for me to polish it. :)
Rings are in good condition so they will also see some further use. They are 46 - 36 - 24. The middle ring is a Spezialized one and the big and the granny ring are Shimano SG-C.
I attached some new outer chainring bolts and also found me some used crank bolts in turquoise.

I have no clue how to ride with clipless pedals so I will go with some VP-338A pedals. I can't remember where they are from. They've been around for some time for sure. Cleaned them and checked the bearings which were spot on..so no real work to do here. For them i got some Spezialized Mountain clips pedal cages, some Tioga Hot Tips and some VP pedal straps all brand new and all in Neon Yellow. I guess this stuff is from racerX ...so thanks my man.
I think by now you get the idea how my Elridge will look like one day.

The last original part remaining on my bike was the Shimano LX FD-M550. That one now lives a happy live on the Scott Super Lite which i gave away to a friend two years ago. Since then i searched for a replacement and eventually found a nice M900 front mech for 10€. That was about the same price i had in mind for this part, too.. so i feel lucky every time i browse Ebay nowadays.
Had it laying around in my bit box for some time and today i cleaned this thing together with my M900 rear mech which i bought back in '91.
The original headset from the Eldridge does its job on my Muirwoods for about 3 years now. Back in the days i bought an Onza Mongo 2 and i was devastated to find out that the stack height was way out. So i sadly put back the original one. The last couple of years my bike was completely without any head set at all but that is about to change. I got a HP-M901 head set from a friend for free which will be a nice fit lookwise. I hope this time the height of the head set fits my fork steerer. We'll see.

Very nice as i'm really loving the splatter effect and the panaracer tyres and the blue ano and yellow theme is really rocking my boat  ..

@Muddy paw: Thanks for your encouraging comment. I try my best to get this bike back to a race worthy status. Hopefully i'll get it done this summer but i wouldn't bet on it. :)
